Myopia Management in Commerce, GA
Slowing Myopia Progression in Children
Commerce Family Eyecare was the first clinic in the area to offer myopia management as a focused service. Today, we continue to help families across Commerce, Jefferson, Maysville, and surrounding towns reduce the long-term impact of myopia in children and teens.
Myopia, or nearsightedness, often worsens steadily through childhood. Unmanaged, it can lead to a higher lifetime risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and vision loss.
Treatment Options We Offer for Myopia Control
Each patient’s plan is designed based on age, lifestyle, and the rate of prescription change. Available treatments include the following listed below.
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)
Custom rigid lenses worn overnight that gently reshape the cornea. Children remove the lenses in the morning and experience clear vision all day without needing glasses or daytime contacts. This method is popular with student-athletes and active kids.
MiSight® 1-Day Soft Contact Lenses
These daily disposable lenses are FDA-approved to slow the progression of myopia in children aged 8 and up. They’re easy to use, and safe for kids who are new to contacts.
NaturalVue® Multifocal Contact Lenses
A daily soft lens with a multifocal design that supports both vision correction and myopia control. Often used when MiSight® isn’t a fit or when kids prefer a multifocal approach.
Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops
A nighttime eye drop that can slow the elongation of the eyeball, which causes worsening myopia. Atropine is sometimes used on its own, and sometimes combined with lens-based treatments.
Arunalight Support for Myopia Management
In select cases, Arunalight is used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan to support visual function and slow the progression of myopia. While not a standalone solution, it can be a helpful addition for patients needing extra support alongside lenses or atropine therapy.
What to Expect from a Myopia Management Program
We start with a baseline evaluation, then develop a custom treatment plan based on the child’s current prescription, corneal health, and visual habits. Follow-up visits are scheduled throughout the year to monitor eye growth and response to treatment.
We provide:
-
Ongoing prescription monitoring
-
Lifestyle and screen-time counseling
-
Adjustments to treatment as children grow
-
Education for parents in English, Spanish, Urdu, and Bengali
All visits are performed at our office in Commerce, with fittings, imaging, and follow-up care handled on-site.
Benefits of Starting Myopia Management Early
Myopia management is most effective when started early, ideally as soon as a child’s prescription shows rapid change. Early treatment can lead to:
-
Lower final prescription
-
Improved eye health in adulthood
-
Fewer lifestyle limitations later in life
-
Reduced anxiety around frequent glasses changes
Even older teens can benefit from stabilization strategies if they are still progressing.
A Local Resource for Families Seeking Long-Term Vision Support
Many families in northeast Georgia choose Commerce Family Eyecare because we combine medical clarity with a family-friendly environment. We take time to explain each treatment, help kids feel comfortable, and provide caregivers with the tools to support success at home.
Appointments are available by direct scheduling or referral from a school nurse, pediatrician, or another eye care provider. The initial consultation includes an exam, corneal measurements, axial length measurements (the length of the eyeball), and treatment planning.
