Dr. Umar Ishaque, O.D., M.P.H. is the founder and lead optometrist at Commerce Family Eyecare, where he is dedicated to delivering compassionate, comprehensive eye care for patients of all ages. With advanced training in both optometry and public health, Dr. Ishaque brings a well-rounded, patient-centered approach to vision care—especially for those facing complex or life-altering visual conditions.
Dr. Ishaque began his academic career studying physiology at McGill University before earning his Master of Public Health from Tulane University. He went on to complete his optometric education at Indiana University School of Optometry, followed by post-doctoral training in low vision rehabilitation. He is also a Fellow of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists and is currently the only certified SVAG (Side Vision Awareness Glasses) IALVS doctor in Georgia.
Specialized Vision Care
Dr. Ishaque has a strong clinical focus on helping patients with visual field loss, including those who experience reduced or missing side (peripheral) vision due to conditions such as stroke, glaucoma, or neurological disorders. He has extensive experience fitting and training patients with side vision awareness glasses, including prism-based and field-expanding lens technologies designed to improve spatial awareness, mobility, and safety.
As the only certified SVAG IALVS doctor in Georgia, Dr. Ishaque offers highly specialized expertise in prescribing and customizing these advanced visual field expansion systems, providing patients with access to care that is not widely available in the region.
In addition, he specializes in the management of chronic and degenerative eye conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and glaucoma. Through personalized low vision rehabilitation plans, Dr. Ishaque works closely with each patient to maximize remaining vision and restore independence using advanced optical aids and adaptive strategies.
